About Al-Muwattaʾ

Al-Muwattaʾ is considered one of the earliest and most refined hadith and fiqh compilations. Imam Mālik authored it upon request from the Abbasid caliph Abū Jaʿfar al-Manṣūr, who desired a unified legal reference for the Muslim world. Imam Mālik refused to oblige the caliph’s wish to enforce the book on all regions, demonstrating deep humility and scholarly balance, but the work nevertheless became a foundational reference across the Muslim world.

This book combines prophetic narrations, legal opinions of the scholars of Madinah, and Mālik’s own juristic insights. Scholars throughout the centuries held Al-Muwattaʾ in exceptional esteem.
